About the Show
"Little Shop of Horrors" opened Off-Broadway in 1982, the same year the MADCo was started. The musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast) is about a nerdy florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood. The musical is based on the low-budget 1960 film The Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Roger Corman. Menken’s musical score is written in the style of 1960's rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown and includes several show-stopping numbers including "Skid Row (Downtown)," "Somewhere That's Green," and "Suddenly Seymour," as well as the title song.
A detailed plot synopsis can be found on the Music Theatre International web site.
The Characters
| Seymour |
Tenor/Baritone (low A to high G) |
Mid- twenties. Our hero. Florist clerk: insecure, naive and put-upon. Sweet and well meaning. |
| Audrey |
Soprano/Alto with Musical Theatre Belt (low A to high D) |
sweet and vulnerable with little education nor self worth. Secret love of Seymour’s life. Stereotypical “ditsy blonde” but must be played with sincerity and realism. |
| Mr. Mushnik |
Baritone (low G to high E-flat) |
Their Boss. East Side Florist-a failure. Gruff. Eastern European Jew meets east Side NYC. |
| Orin |
Tenor/Baritone (low C to high G) |
A handsome egotistical dentist with sadistic tendencies in the bedroom as well as in the dentist office. Strong laugh and sense of comedic timing needed. |
| The Plant (Audrey II) Puppeteer |
|
the plant is a series of three puppets (wide mouthed) of increasing size. The last and largest puppet fills the stage. Previous puppetry experience a plus but the director will train. Must be a team player. |
| The Voice of the Plant |
Tenor/Baritone (low B-flat to high G) |
street smart conniving villain. Rhythm and Blues vocal ability. Will work closely with puppeteer for lip synching purposes. |
| Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon |
(various ranges / must be able to hold a part in tight 3-part harmony) |
Three Skid Row High School drop outs. Hip and smart they are the only characters who truly know what is really going on ala Greek Chorus. Strong vocal ability a must. Function as a doo-wop style trio. |
| Additional Roles include |
various |
Wino’s, Customers, Radio Announcer, Mr. Bernstein, Mrs. Luce, Skip Snip. and Patrick Martin. These are strong character type roles appearing briefly but nevertheless important. |
