SYNOPSIS:
Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for best drama,
this poignant comic-drama is set in Yonkers, New York in 1942. While
the war rages in Europe, 2 boys, aged 13 and 16, must spend one year
with their demanding grandmother. The two children are challenged and
learn the essentials of life through their relationships with their
father, uncle and aunts, all peculiar characters. Some very humorous
and touching moments make this play a masterpiece.
CAST OF CHARACTERS:
GRANDMA (JoAnne Lazinsky) - 70 odd years old. Authority and discipline seem to be her overriding characteristics and she would demand
attention in a crowd. She speaks with few, but carefully chosen words, with a clear German accent.
JAY (Dave White) - Not quite 16 years old. Has to move in with his Grandma and Aunt and help his brother Jay keep his sanity.
ARTY (Joey Tito) - About 13 1/2 years old. Is more willing to speak up to people, and it often gets him in trouble.
BELLA (Susan Rundbaken) - The boys' aunt. She is in her mid-thirties. She is neat, and sweet, and pretty, although looking older
than her age. She's as warm and congenial as she is emotionally arrested.
LOUIE (Alan Dary) - The boys' uncle. He is about 36 years old. He is a small time mobster who is in some trouble so he comes
home. He was the child who didn't let his mother break him.
EDDIE (Warren Small) - The boys' father. He has left them with their grandmother while he makes some money to pay off his debts.
He is about 41.
GERT (Elaine St. Jean) - The boys' other aunt. She is in her mid to late thirties and speaks half of her sentences breathing in and
the other half breathing out.
