History

The Company was formed in June, 1982 by a small group of performers, affectionately known as "The Dreamers", who felt that the time had come for a community theater in the local area.

The dream became a reality with their first production of House of Blue Leaves, in 1983, which won approval from their enthusiastic audience. This production was later taken to the New England Theater Conference at Brandeis University.

1984 marked the first full musical, with the production of Chicago, followed by An Evening of One-Acts, Mame, You Can't Take It With You, Anything Goes, Once Upon A Matress, The Miracle Worker, and The Passion of Dracula. The production of Bye, Bye, Birdie in 1988 attracted many eager young people, bringing greater energy to the company.

An Experimental Theater Weekend opened opportunities for people to participate in every creative aspect of theater. In November, 1988, Pippin was presented and in April 1989, the Company performed On Golden Pond.

In March 1989, MAD Company's Pvt. Wars won Best Production at the NH Theater Festival and again in the regional competition at the New England Festival of Community Theatre. Pvt. Wars went on to the national competition sponsored by the American Association of Community Theater in Omaha, Nebraska, winning the invitation to Dundalk, Ireland for an international competition in May 1990.

1994 saw the company perform their first show, The Foreigner, in the newly renovated Adams Memorial Opera House, Derry. The sun came out over Derry in April 1995 when M.A.D. Company brought the Tony Award winning show Annie to the stage receiving the accolade of seven full houses and standing ovations from its apprecaitive audiences.

Having previously performed Neil Simon's Plaza Suite, 1995 again saw a return to this playwright with Rumors, a sophisticated, yet hilarious, comedy which saw audiences roaring with laughter. In 1996, Guys and Dolls received reviews any Broadway company would be proud of, this was to be followed by the antics of Harvey, that well known "pooka". M.A.D. Company then "brushed up their Shakespeare" in 1997 with the colorful production of Kiss Me Kate.

In recent years, MADCo has graced the stage with the likes of Oliver and Our Town in 2001, Chicago: The Musical (4 of our cast were honored to receive awards for their parts in that show) and Lost in Yonkers in 2002, Oklahoma!, Nunsense and The Real Inspector Hound in 2003, Cabaret (winning 3 awards for Best Community Theatre Musical, Best Actor, and Best Music Direction) and You Can't Take It With You in 2004, Sideshow (winning two awards for Best Actress and Music Direction) and Hot*l Baltimore in 2005 and most recently Into the Woods and Moon Over Buffalo in 2006. We continue to strive towards the quality entertainment that our founders envisioned.
